AGE is no obstacle for Ian Brims who will compete in the Trevan Ford Super Sedan 50-lap Golden Jubilee feature race at Lismore Speedway tomorrow night.
At 70 years of age he is still one of the most competitive drivers in the country and has no intention of hanging up the helmet while ever he is enjoying his racing and can cut it with the best of ’em.
“I feel about 40 when I strap into the car,” Ian joked yesterday.
“I always feel pretty good and I am always keen to race. If you have a bad night, of course you get disappointed, but I still love racing and being involved with the sport.”
That involvement goes further for Ian Brims than just competing. His company, Brims Concrete, is the naming rights sponsor of the series sanctioned by the Super Sedan Association of Queensland.
“The sponsorship is I guess because I have been involved with the sport for such a long time. It’s great to put something back into the sport by sponsoring the series.”
This weekend represents round 15 of the Brims Concrete Super Sedan Series which travels to tracks throughout Queensland and also includes the Lismore Showground as a stopping off destination for the series.
That suits Ian who has been a regular at the circuit throughout his career.
Brims says the level of competition in the series has stepped up considerably in recent seasons.
“It’s very tough because you have got so many good cars and drivers. It used to be just a couple of drivers who were hard to beat but that’s not the case now.
“Also, there are a few good young drivers coming through and they’re putting a lot of pressure on the more senior competitors. It all adds up to a very competitive series in 2019.”
Brims has spent the past 19 years racing Super Sedans and before that drove Modified Production Sedans for 13 years.
He is a former Australian Modified Sedan Champion and NSW Super Sedan title holder.
He certainly has the runs on the board and will be looking to pick up major points in Saturday night’s round.
Further local interest focuses on long standing Lismore regular Tania Smith who will drive a Lismore-built car out of the Rocket Racecars factory operated by Danny Smith.
Tania, who was a winner of the Grenville Anderson East Coast Grand National at the Lismore circuit a number of years ago, is currently placed sixth in the series points standings and is enjoying a good season.
Only three points separates the top two going into this round as Matt Pascoe leads over Wayne Randall. Both have entered for this Saturday night’s round.
Racing for a number of support categories also will be featured on this weekend’s variety program. Gates open at 4pm and racing commences at 5:30pm.
