FORMER National Champion Scott Cannon, who has entered for the opening round of the Mr Modified Series at Castrol Edge Lismore Speedway on Boxing Night, knows what it takes to win this tournament.
It requires consistency – and that was his trademark when he took honours in the 2015-16 season tournament.
“It’s not only about winning, but also scoring points to ensure you’re there in the standings at the finish when it really counts,” Cannon said.
No better example of that philosophy came in the Mr Modified Series grand final on January 9, 2016 at Lismore Speedway.
While the plaudits went to former NSW Junior Champion Chris Corbett for his main event victory, it was Cannon’s runner-up finish that also caught the attention of race fans.
Cannon had dominated the initial two rounds and was ready to add the finishing touches to what had been a very strong campaign.
But Chris Corbett stood in his way of another main event win. It was a great battle at the head of the field between Cannon and Corbett. But nearing the end of the feature race Cannon knew he had the points needed to take out the Mr Modified Series.
He relied on his better judgement and the security of “points in the bank” to settle for a safe second at the finish – and a Mr Modified series win through consistency.
Cannon’s 661 points left him 63 points clear of Corbett (598) when the final standings were declared official.
Cannon faces tough opposition this Boxing Night, headed by defending Mr Modified Series Champion Andrew Pezzutti. Throw in former Australian Champion Mark Robinson and another national titleholder Jai Stephenson and close to 30 other top liners, and the stage is set for one of the most keenly contested Mr Modified tournaments in its long history.
“It won’t be easy, that’s for sure,” Cannon said.
“There is a very good line up of cars and drivers and any number of drivers who have entered have a winning chance. It will be a tough Mr Modified series this season.”
One of the drivers who was first to nominate for this season’s series was Chris Corbett while it’s also interesting to note that the third placegetter behind runner Corbett and winner Cannon back in 2016, Anthony Ashen, also has entered as the top three from a couple of years ago continue their on-track rivalry.
A support card featuring racing for Modified Sedans, Street Stocks, Junior Sedans, Production Sedans and Wingless Sprints also will be featured.
