No power shortage for new BMW M3

Riley Riley

The new BMW M3 sedan and wagon arrive later this year with the promise of more power.

But time must be running out for these petrol-powered anachronisms with the drift to all-electric power trains.

Both models have received a host of enhancements, headlined by an increase in output for the M xDrive variants.

The M TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder unit now puts out an impressive 390kW, up from the 375kW of their predecessors.

This brings the M xDrive M3 models into line with the M4 high-performance coupe and convertible that will also launch later this year.

Torque remains the same for xDrive variants at 650Nm, with drive to all four wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

Acceleration figures for the BMW M3 all-wheel-drive variants remain at supercar-like pace.

The BMW M3 Competition Sedan with M xDrive dispatches the dash from 0-100km/h in just 3.5-seconds, while the BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive is a tenth slower at 3.6 seconds.

The increased output of the all-wheel-drive models leads to even faster 0-200km/h times.

The sedan now hits that mark in 11.8 seconds, while the touring achieves it in 12.4 seconds.

This is 0.5 seconds faster in both cases.

Power and torque figures remain the same for rear-drive variants, at 353kW/550Nm.

This variant continues to offer a segment-unique, enthusiast-focused, six-speed manual transmission.

Along with an increase in power, there have been styling and infotainment changes.

These include new headlights, as well as new alloy wheel designs.

A new flat-bottom steering wheel, derived directly from motorsport, features in the revised interior, alongside new trim elements and BMW Operating System 8.5.

The latter serves as the underpinning of the latest generation of BMW iDrive to further elevate the user experience.

Despite the increased uptake of all-electric offerings, BMW M continues to power ahead in terms of sales in Australia, with registrations up 38.8 per cent to the end of April.

Australia is one of the world’s top markets for the brand in the share of cars that wear the storied badge among the overall sales mix.
