Electricity never looked better in the form of GMC’s all-electric Hummer EV SUV.
Off road credentials include 406mm of ground clearance, a wading depth of 813mm, suspension travel of 330mm, with approach and departure angles of more than 49 degrees.
New tech includes trail mapping through a redesigned myGMC app and Power Station that turns the vehicle into a portable generator with up to 3kW of power available to external devices — including other EVs.
GM sold the Hummer H3 here briefly between 2007 and 2008, powered by a 180kW 3.7-litre Vortec five cylinder petrol engine that was a bit of a gas guzzler.
The Hummer EV on the other hand couldn’t be more different, with a choice of two or three electric motors and not a drop of petroleum in sight.
Hummer EV’s strong, interdependent body/battery structure permits the use of removable roof panels, with expected best-in-class off-road proportions to help make the new SUV even more maneuverable.
Signature features include CrabWalk that allows the vehicle to move diagonally as well as Extract Mode4 that provides an extra 150mm of lift to get out of sticky situations.
With a 3128mm wheelbase, 227mm less than the Pickup version, all-new Hummer EV SUV offers greater maneuverability, with a turning circle of only 10.8 metres thanks to 4 Wheel Steer.
The three-motor Ultium Drive system delivers up to 619kW of power and an estimated 1560Nm of torque, enough power to hurl the vehicle from 0-100km/h in just over 3.6 seconds.
Range from a single charge is claimed to be more than 480km.
Without the constraints of a conventional propulsion system and traditional drive axles, tremendous power and control is available to each wheel.
In fact, the Ultium drive system can channel power to a single wheel, keeping the vehicle moving in some of the roughest terrain — including 60 percent grades, 45cm steps and water more than 80cm deep.
Standard features on 2X, 3X and Edition 1 models include 4 Wheel Steer with CrabWalk, as well as Adaptive Air Suspension with Extract Mode4 and 22-inch wheels with 35-inch-OD Goodyear all-terrain rubber.
Standard on 3X and Edition 1 is e4WD with torque vectoring.
The optional Extreme Off-Road Package adds:
- Unique 18-inch wheels and 35-inch-OD Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tyres
- Underbody armour and rock sliders
- UltraVision with underbody cameras (front- and rear-facing with wash system)
- Front eLocker and rear virtual lockers
- Heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts
Hummer EV’s user experience team worked with Perception, a creative agency best known for its work with the Marvel Universe, to create a cinematic in-cabin experience that engages the senses.
Special features such as Watts To Freedom bring their own unique multisensory, interactive experiences, with distinctive sound via premium Bose audio feel through the haptic driver’s seat and sight with custom screen displays showing the special performance mode is “armed and ready.”
The user experience is customisable through My Mode, which allows the driver to tailor their favorite features including steering, suspension, sound and acceleration.
The rear design is unique to the SUV and incorporates a standard full-size spare tyre mounted on a power operated, swing-out tailgate.
Performance targets, estimates and capability specifications are of course based on computer-aided analysis and simulation using virtual engineering tools.
The Edition 1 is expected to launch next year. For more info go to www.gmc.com/HummerEV.
