Toyota Australia has issued a safety recall for more than 8000 Prius and Prius V vehicles produced over a six-year period, between October 2008 and November 2014.
Toyota has found in rare situations, the vehicle may not enter a fail-safe driving mode as intended.
If this occurs, the vehicle could lose power and stall.
The recall is apparently because of a fault in the software controlling the hybrid system, also known as the Power Management ECU.
While power steering and braking would remain operational, a vehicle stall while driving at higher speeds could increase the risk of a crash.
Toyota Australia will shortly contact all affected vehicle owners advising them details of this recall campaign so they can make an appointment at their preferred Toyota dealer.
Toyota dealers will reprogram the Power Management ECU, which will take approximately 40 minutes.
This will be carried out free of charge.
There have been no incidents or injuries reported in Australia as a result of this condition.
