A big night for sport in both Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday night.
On Friday Adelaide beat Geelong in the AFL to book a spot in the grandfinal, while Melbourne demolished the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL to see the Storm progress to the NRL Grand final.
So, AFL fans in Melbourne and NRL fans in Sydney were left wondering whether a Melbourne team would make the AFL Grand Final – and if a Sydney based team would contest the NRL Grand Final.
First up, the Richmond Tigers took on the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
After a close first half, the Tigers ran away with the game in the second half for the win.
The Tigers now take on the Adelaide Crows in the Grand Final next Saturday.
Meanwhile, in Sydney, it was left to the Sydney Roosters to restore some much-needed pride for Sydney and NSW fans.
They took on the North Queensland Cowboys, the team that won the premiership in 2015, but have struggled this year after losing two of their best players earlier in the season – Jonathan Thurston and Matt Scott.
The Cowboys limped into the finals after St George lost to Canterbury in the final round, which left them with the unenviable position of having to win three sudden death games in the final series.
Despite being underdogs for the last three weeks, the Cowboys beat a very disappointing Roosters side.
The Cowboys are now the first team since 2009 to make the grand final from 8th place.
Unfortunately for Sydney fans, this year’s NRL grand final will be played between two teams from interstate for the third time after the Broncos beat the Storm in 2006 and the Cowboys accounted for the Storm in 2015.
The big question for Sydneysiders is who do they cheer for in the Grand Final?
Do we cheer for the Cowboys from North Queensland?
How can we cheer for a Queensland team?
Or do we cheer for the Storm, a team full of champion Queensland players, who have robbed us of origin glory for the last 12 years?
I’m cheering for Adelaide.
