ALL Porsche really wanted to do was see if their new twin-turbo 911 GT2 RS could get around the Nordschleife in less than 7m 05s.
But they came away last week with a new record for the super-scary 20.7km circuit at Nurnberg: a stunning 6m 47.3s – some 17 seconds quicker than the team’s target and 5s faster than the previous mark, set by a Lamborghini Huracan LP640-4 Performante.
What’s more the two 515kW flat-six Porsches, driven by Lars Kern and Nick Tandy, both went faster than the Lambo on their first flying lap.
“It’s not just the record time achieved by the GT2 RS that demonstrates the vehicle’s class, but also its consistent performance in every lap,” spokesman Andreas Preuninger said.
“We’re particularly proud that this was achieved with two different vehicles and two different drivers. It underlines the GT2 RS’s ability to reproduce this record result over and over again.”
Kern is a Porsche test driver and Tandy a Porsche factory driver, who did the ‘Ring run soon after returning to Germany after a six-hour enduro at Austin, Texas.
The record was credited to Kern, who regularly competes in the VLN Endurance Championship on the Nürburgring and knows the Nordschleife inside out.
He averaged 184.11km/h.
The lightweight coupe car ran on Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres and its bi-turbo motor put out 515kW and 750Nm. It had a mass of 1470kg, with a full tank.
It can run to 100km/h in 2.8 seconds and on to a top of 340km/h, and oh yes, its official combined fuel consumption is given as 11.8L/100km – though the ones driven by Kern and Tandy might have used a tad more than that.
Bottom line: The GT2 RS is the most powerful, and fastest 911 ever built.
