Peek-a-boo. Another Mahindra to tempt you

Riley Riley

Hot on the heels of its release 16 months ago Mahindra has released a black edition of its flagship XUV700.

Built from the ground up on an all-new platform, XUV700 is designed to appeal to SUV customers in Australia with its unmissable presence, spirited performance, sophisticated dynamics, modern technology and global safety standards.

The thing is we can’t tell you how many it has actually sold here during this time because Mahindra has not made its sales figures available.

Priced from $43,990 driveaway, the new Black Edition promises a bold new look and enhanced luxury features.

That is however $4000 more than the AXL7 on which it is based and $7000 more than the entry AXL.

For your money the seven-seater acquires a blacked-out grille, 18-inch black alloys, black 18-inch alloys and Napoli black exterior paint.

The exclusivity continues inside with black interior trim, including a black dashboard, dark chrome surround for the aircon vents, door handles and steering wheel, piano black finish on the doors and console, along with ventilated front seats.

There is also driver’s seat memory.

In terms of technology, Black Edition is equipped with updated wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

At the heart of the XUV700, is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 149kW and 380Nm of torque.

All grades are fitted with Mahindra’s smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission.

And all come with a 7-year/150,000km warranty and seven years roadside assistance, along with five-year capped price service.

When we tested the XUV700 12 months ago, not only did we find the ride and handling very good, it was actually a bit of fun to drive, with its torquey turbo engine.

The wagon remains reasonably stable and controlled in corners, inevitably with some body roll and tyre squeal on the way out.

Unfortunately, the XUV700 remains unrated for safety.

But it does come with seven airbags including a driver’s knee bag, Smart Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.

Bottom line. Here’s a car crying out for a proper marketing campaign.
