Less powerful Mustang a harder sell

Riley Riley

Ford’s updated. turbo four cylinder Mustang actually delivers less power than its predecessor, but a tiny bit more torque.

But you won’t read that in the company’s press material.

You need to read between the lines.

Power is down from 233 to 224kW while torque has been boosted from 432 to a more useful 441Nm.

Ford blames the different figure on a change in the way the car was tested.

But it’s happy to claim the extra torque, thanks to the new 10-speed auto that can happily take the extra pluck.

The problem is that the lower power output will make the car an even harder sell in a market that already heavily favours the V8.

The look of the turbo four has been freshened up, with new colours and customisation options.

Inside, the cabin has been upgraded, with improved materials, higher quality finishes and smart design elements.

New technology that includes a digital dash, 1000 watt B&O Play audio system and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

That’s the other thing.

Mustang is yet to get a five-star safety rating, with just three stars to its name — but this doesn’t seem to deter most buyers.

Prices for the new EcoBoost model start from $49,990.
