LAST month 21 people bought new Ferraris, 64 bought Maseratis, 112 opted for a new Alfa Romeo and Volvo sales more than doubled to 510.
National vehicle sales in April were pretty close to the March figures, just 0.2 per cent down, and Toyota was again way out in front with total sales of 16,647, followed by Mazda and Hyundai.
Hilux and Corolla took the first two spots in individual models, with Ford Ranger third and Mazda 3, Hyundai i30 and Hyundai Tucson next in line, just ahead of Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishu ASX, Toyota Prado and Holden Colorado.
The market tally was 374,468 units.
SUVs accounted for 43.6 per cent of the market, with sedans and hatches on 33.2 per cent, and light commercials making up the remaining 19.4 per cent.
Top in the micro car section was Kia’s cute Picanto, Hyundai Accent led the small cars, Corolla the light cars and Camry the mediums.
Holden’s remaining Commodores led the large cars from Kia’s Stinger, and in the SUV category, the compacts were dominated by Mitsubishi’s ASX.
Hyundai Tucson was the king of the medium-sized SUVs with nearly 100 sales more than customary leader Mazda CX-5, and Toyota took the first three spots in the large sector with its Prado, Land Cruiser and Kluger.
Kia’s Carnival remained unchallenged in the people mover sector, almost 400 sales ahead of its nearest rival – the Chinese LDV G10.
Ford Mustang was well ahead among the sports cars with 381 sales, from Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe and cabrio on 137, then BMW 2 Series coupe/cabrio (124) Mazda MX-5 (84), and Toyota 86 with 77 sales.
