Chop-top Cayenne a coupe in name

Coupes used to be two-door sporty cars with a fixed roof, but some four-door ‘coupes’ have started appearing in recent years, and Porsche has just joined the trend with its Cayenne Coupé.

It’s an addition to Porsche’s third generation of its SUV and features sharper lines with a restyled tail, an adaptive rear spoiler and a choice of a panoramic fixed glass roof or an optional carbon roof.

“The Coupé includes all the technical highlights of the current Cayenne, but has an even more dynamic design and new technical details that position it as more progressive, athletic, and emotional,” company chairman Oliver Blume said.

It has a steep roof line that makes the Coupé appear look more dynamic and the  windscreen and A-pillar are shallower than in the standard Cayenne, due to a 20mm lower  roof.

A roof spoiler is combined with a new adaptive rear spoiler and extends by 135mm at speeds of more than 90 km/h, increasing the contact pressure on the rear axle.

The SUV comes with a vast panoramic fixed glass roof and an integrated roller blind protects against sun exposure and cold.

A contoured carbon roof is optionally available for the Coupé on request.

The carbon roof is available in one of the three lightweight sports packages.

There’s plenty of space for up to four people, with eight-way sports seats up front and a rear bench that is divided into two individual seats.

Alternatively, the comfort rear seats – a familiar feature of the Cayenne – can be ordered at no additional cost.

Boot capacity is 625 litres, expandable to 1540 litres with the rear seats folded.

There’s also a choice of two high-performance engines: a six-cylinder turbo 3.0-litre with 250kW/450Nm and a 4.0-litre V8 offering 404kW/707Nm.

The six-pot can run to 100km/h in 6.0 seconds and has a 243km/h top speed, while the V8 is capable of despatching the sprint in 3.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 286km/h.

You can order a Cayenne Coupé now and pick it up early next year.

Prices start at $128,400 for the Cayenne Coupé and $254,000 for the Cayenne Turbo Coupé.
