Alfa claims title of world’s fastest SUV

THE dust had barely settled on Porsche’s record on the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife circuit when Alfa Romeo did something similar with the soon-to-arrive Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

Alfa has claimed the title of world’s fastest production SUV, after lapping the devilish 20.6km track in 7 minutes 51.7 seconds, eight seconds faster than the previous record – the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

“We specifically engineered and designed the Stelvio Quadrifoglio to set world-class benchmarks and it did not disappoint,” Alfa Romeo chief Reid Bigland said.

“We’re proud to now hold two Nürburgring lap time records with the Giulia Quadrifoglio as the fastest four-door production sedan and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio as the fastest production SUV.”

The Stelvio Quadrifoglio claims to integrate lightweight, state-of-the-art materials that enable and deliver perfect 50:50 weight distribution, segment-leading torsional rigidity, class-exclusive carbon fibre driveshaft and the most direct steering available.

The ultra-high performance SUV has an all-aluminium, direct-injection 2.9-litre 24-valve twin-turbo intercooled V6, delivering 380kW, paired with the standard Q4 all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
