Xpeng gets going with G6

Get ready because there’s likely to be another strange car parked in your street.

Reservations are now open for the new Xpeng G6, set to hit showrooms sometime this month.

There’s four-variants of the five-seat EV, priced from $51,800 plus on-roads.

Who’s Xpeng, you ask?

The Chinese company describes itself as a global AI mobility technology company and develops in-house technologies including full-stack advanced driver-assistance systems, an in-car intelligent operating system, powertrain systems and vehicle electronic/electrical architecture.

Xpeng vehicles were first sold in Australia in late 2024 through local third-party distributor, TrueEV.

However, in 2026, Xpeng announced the launch of its own dealership network in the country after TrueEV entered receivership and launched litigation against Xpeng in March.

The new G6 is a premium, mid-size, five-seat electric SUV built on Xpeng’s 800V high-voltage architecture, with a driving range of up to 525km.

The minimalist design was reportedly developed in collaboration with the Chinese science fiction writer Liu Cixin.

Striking double-row headlights are made up of two closely spaced LED strips.

G6 introduces a sharper exterior design, upgraded cabin technology, expanded model choice and 5C ultra-fast charging capability across the range, with 10 to 80 percent DC charging possible in as little as 12 minutes.

It is available with two powertrain variants.

The basic version is equipped with a single rear electric motor that produces 218kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

The top-of-the-line, all-wheel drive model comes with two electric motors and pumps out for a total of 358kW and 660Nm, with a 0-100km/h figure of 4.1 seconds.

Since 2025, the updated G6 is equipped with either a 68.5 kWh LFP or a 80.8 kWh NMC battery, both again supplied by CALB.

Both packs are capable 5C DC fast charging, with peak rates of 382kW and 451kW for the smaller and larger packs, respectively.

This allows both packs to charge from 10-80 per cent in as little as 12 minutes

The feature list reads like that of most Chinese EVs, with a 15.6-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch driver display, over-the-air software update capability, and dual wireless phone charging.

The Xopera audio system boats with 18 speakers, with a 7.1.4 setup.

Order books open for Suzuki’s electric Vitara

The Black Edition is the hero of the range, with a monochrome exterior design treatment.

It gets the black treatment with exclusive black exterior paint, 20-inch wheels in black finish, smoked-black exterior badging, smoked-black housings on the front fender and front door camera units, smoked-black front bumper light strip accents and black brake calipers.
