Xpeng electric people mover packs a punch

Chinese brand Xpeng has revealed pricing and specification for its flagship X9 fully-electric people mover.

The seven-seater will be available in two grades — Standard Range from $89,900 and AWD Performance from $109,900 — both figures before on-road costs.

It’s the second offering from the standalone brand, formed in 2014 by two former executives of GAC, with the launch of its first model just four years later.

The company describes itself as a global AI mobility technology company that develops in-house technologies, including full-stack advanced driver-assistance systems, an in-car intelligent operating system, powertrain systems and vehicle electronic/electrical architecture.

Among other investors is Volkswagen which holds a small stake in the company.

The first Xpeng to be sold here was the five-seat G6 electric SUV in late 2024, but this was via a third-party distributor, TrueEV.

In 2026, however, Xpeng announced the launch of its own dealership network after TrueEV entered receivership.

X9 is built on Xpeng’s 800 volt silicon carbide (SiC) high-voltage platform with 5C ultra-fast charging capability.

AWD Performance boasts 370kW of power and 640Nm of torque, and can sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds.

With a 110 kWh battery it delivers a range of up to 580km (WLTP).

Standard Range with a 95 kWh battery can travel up to 535km on a single charge.

Able to be charged at a rate of up to 542kW, the AWD Performance variant can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 12 minutes (under test conditions).

Other highlights include Active Rear-Wheel Steering and intelligent dual-chamber air suspension, working with Xpeng’s AI chassis system to deliver confident handling in urban environments while maintaining stability on the highway.

Its aerodynamic “Starship” design delivers a drag coefficient of just 0.236, while preserving the interior space expected of a full-size MPV.

The X9 redefines MPV versatility with its spacious flat-floor cabin and intelligent seating flexibility.

With all seven seats in use, it still provides a generous 721-litre boot capacity, capable of carrying seven 20-inch carry-on suitcases.

The 60/40 split-folding second and third rows allow the cabin to seamlessly adapt to different needs, from a premium four-seat lounge layout to practical five, six or seven-seat configurations, while one-touch folding unlocks up to 2554 litres of cargo space.

The X9’s second-row features Xpeng’s Zero Gravity seats, with 14-way electric adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage functions.

Engineered to deliver a first-class relaxation experience, the seats position the body in an optimal posture, aligning the heart and knee levels to reduce pressure and maximise passenger comfort.

Technology highlights include a 21.4-inch rear entertainment display, 27-speaker XOPERA premium audio system, and a voice-controlled integrated refrigerator (0 to 50 degrees).

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295-powered infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, OTA software updates and Xpeng’s intelligent voice assistant.

X9 is covered by a 7-year unlimited kilometre warranty, plus 8-year/160,000km warranty for the high voltage battery.

Xpeng’s Damian Royce said the X9 combines the space and practicality of a seven-seat MPV with the refinement and confidence of a luxury SUV, using technologies such as active rear-wheel steering and intelligent dual-chamber air suspension to make it feel far smaller and sharper from behind the wheel.
