Space age Staria set to blast off

Riley Riley

Check out this road going spaceship.

The Staria is a replacement for Hyundai’s aging iMax people mover and sits on the same platform as the Kia Carnival.

It’s due to make its debut in the next few weeks and will be available with seating for up to 11 people, although this version will be available only in South Korea.

Staria, Hyundai says, previews the space that will be available in future Purpose Built Vehicles (PBVs) and reflects a recent shift in consumer needs that prioritise the use of interior space.

The overall look is based on what it calls an ‘inside-out’ approach, a new design approach for future models that begins with the interior before moving outside.

Designed to meet the needs of both families and business, Staria provides next-level mobility that make time in transit more accommodating, productive and worthwhile.

But wait, there’s more . . .

“Staria’s exterior presents a futuristic, pure, streamlined silhouette, defined by a fluid curve running from front to back, inspired by the halo that illuminates Earth’s horizon during sunrise when viewed from space.”

Seriously?

One thing’s for sure. The gloves are off, with radical new designs that take fight up to the establishment.

Hyundai is sending a clear message that it is no longer content to play second fiddle to the Japanese or anyone else for that matter. Game on!

Staria’s simple front features horizontal DRLs and a positioning light that together stretch across the width of the vehicle.

The bold, wide radiator grille with unique patterns creates an instantly recognisable façade.

Its sophisticated space-age appearance is further defined by low-set headlights positioned each side of the grille.

All front parts are painted to match the body colours to maximise the modern styling.

Lowered beltlines and large side windows improve as well as providing a sense of openness.

But wait there’s more . . .

“Inspired by the traditional Korean architectural style known as hanok, this sense of spaciousness makes passengers feel as if the outer scenes are connected to the inside.”

The rear adopts a simple look, with eye-catching vertical tail lights and wide rear window.

The rear bumper has been lowered to help passengers easily load and unload cargo.

Staria Premium adds exclusive design cues to provide a more luxurious look and feel.

The radiator grille is designed with a unique mesh pattern.

The chrome line around the cube-type, full-LED headlights together with tinted brass chrome for the Hyundai badge, wheels, side mirrors and door handles — highlight the sophisticated, high-end styling.

Premium 18-inch wheels include diamond patterns and graphics, to emphasise the modern look.

Rear combination lights feature a unique Parametric Pixel design with light-shaped garnish on top.

The interior is, Hyundai says, inspired by the lounge of a cruise ship.

Lower beltlines and expansive panoramic windows, create a spacious, stimulating environment for passengers.

The driver-focused cockpit faetures a futuristic hi-tech look with a 10.25-inch front display screen, touch-based center fascia and button-type electronic shift lever.

The digital cluster is located on top of the dashboard, providing an unobstructed view for the driver.

Storage space is available on top of the overhead console, bottom of the cluster and top and bottom of the centre fascia.

The center console box is equipped with cup holders, USB ports and additional storage space for both driver and passengers.

Premium offers a variety of additional interior features.

The 7-seat high-end model includes a one-touch relaxation mode for second-row passengers, automatically reclining to a seat posture that comfortably disperses the passenger’s weight and improves overall body balance.

The 9-seater has second-row seats with the added ability to swivel 180 degrees to face passengers in the third row.

The 64-colour ambient mood lighting, available in Premium variants, provides exceptional interior atmosphere.

The harmonious direct and indirect lighting can be operated from the cockpit, floor console, door and luggage trims.

“Staria will provide a completely new experience and value proposition to customers through its unprecedented design and innovative features,”

Senior Vice President and Head of Global Hyundai Design, SangYup Lee, said.

Staria offers a number of seating arrangements, from two to 11 seats, making it suitable for both families and business use.

Staria Premium is available in seven, nine and 11-seat configurations with exclusive design cues and interior upgrades.
