Seton Falcon takes a hammering

Glenn Seton’s championship winning EL Falcon is expected to join the $1 million club this weekend.

The car which was built for the Bathurst 1000 in 1996 will be auctioned by Lloyds this Saturday from 12pm east coast time.

It was ub this Falcon that Seton posted the record top speed for famous Conrod Straight when he clocked 302km/h — a benchmark that stood for 18 years.

Although Seton started the race from pole position, victory once again eluded him — although he did claim the Australian Touring Car Championship at the helm of the same car the following year.

The hapless driver from Sydney never managed to win at Bathurst, the premier event on the touring car calendar.

He came very close in in the 1995 Bathurst 1000 and was leading until the final 10 laps, when engine failure forced him out of the race.

The car was piloted by Neil Crompton in 1998 and 1999, and notched up eight years on the track before it was benched in 2002.

“Glenn Seton is a true motorsport legend in Australia and it is an honour to be able to auction one of the most impressive sporting vehicles and pass it on to its next custodians,” Lloyds’ Lee Hames said.

“The new owners will not just be buying a piece of extremely rare motorsport history, but they will now have the opportunity to create their own memories.

“The car is in immaculate condition and the current owner is to be commended for this.”

As well as taking home the Falcon, the winning bidder will also receive the 1998 Championship helmet, race suit and Shell series banner — all signed by Glenn Seton.

This car features as part of one of Lloyds biggest Classic Car auctions ever featuring more than 300 cars, including Kerry Packer’s 1977 Jaguar XJS, an extremely rare HSV VN SS Group A build #002, Russel Ingall’s 2000 Castrol V8 Supercar — and many other classic Australian, American and European vehicles.

It is sure to be a weekend of record breakers and memorable moments, with something for everyone to enjoy.

For those who cannot attend the Queensland auction, the entire thing will be live-streamed on the Lloyds Auctions website and social media platforms YouTube and Facebook.

Bids can be made in person on the day, or you can view the car and bid online here.
