Power play to Mustang must-haves

Riley Riley

It was at least a decade ago that I asked Ford heavies when they planned to build an electric Mustang?

I was in Detroit for the launch of the then new Focus.

The question, asked at a round table conference of media and Ford execs, was greeted with some surprise.

“If you’re serious about reducing carbon emissions, then wouldn’t it logical to swap the V8 in the Mustang for an electric powertrain?” I asked (or words to that effect).

You’d think I had two heads they way they looked at me.

That was then. This is now, however, because Ford has indeed confirmed it will be building an electric Mustang — or at least an electric vehicle with a Mustang badge on the front.

You see the all-electric Mustang Mach-E is or will be an SUV — kind of a bet each way don’t you think?

The jury is out on the merits of that one.

Does the world need another SUV? No.

Can Ford make money out of it? You bet it can!

The car will be introduced at a special event today in Los Angeles, hosted by actor Idris Elba.

The order books will open soon afterwards, with customers able to reserve their spot in line for the Mustang Mach-E by making a $500 refundable reservation deposit.

Customers in the US and Europe who wish to reserve a vehicle can select their desired specification, create a Ford account, select their preferred Ford dealer, and enter their credit/debit card details and address.

No mention of Australian orders, I’m afraid (those Ford guys must have long memories).

Customers who reserve a vehicle will be able to finalise their configuration next year when the ordering window opens.

Reservation timing for China will be announced at a later date.
