For many years Kia’s 7-year unlimited kilometre warranty has been the benchmark when it comes to new car sales in Australia.
We still remember its introduction.
There’s been many challengers since and Mitsubishi set the cat among the pigeons with its 10-year/200,000km warranty which controversially requires that customers service their vehicles with the company.
Now, at a time when the quest for the consumer dollars has never been more competitive, Nissan has upped the ante with Australia’s first 10-year/300,000km warranty which much like Mitsubishi stipulates its cars must be serviced with Nissan to qualify.
Nissan has also announced a raft of other value-addons including cheaper servicing via a new 5-year flat price service program and up to 10 years of roadside assistance.
The 10-year warranty will ‘benefit’ both private and commercial customers, Nissan says.
It is offered in addition to the existing 5-year unlimited kilometre warranty on new Nissans sold here.
To qualify for the 10-year/300,000km warranty, Nissan owners simply need to service their vehicle at the “correct intervals” at a Nissan dealer.
To ensure that existing Nissan owners also benefit, the 10-year/300,000km warranty will be backdated to January 1, 2021.
Nissan vehicles purchased new since then that have completed all scheduled services with Nissan (at the correct interval/time) automatically qualify for the warranty extension.
Vehicles that have not been serviced with Nissan are able to return to a Nissan Dealer to have a scheduled service and vehicle assessment to assess their eligibility to enter the program.
The new Nissan flat price service program will see service costs on all new Nissans reduced, with savings of up to $1145 over the period, depending on model.
Nissan Qashqai, X-TRAIL, Juke and Pathfinder owners will pay a flat price of just $399 each service for the first five services.
Patrol, Navara and Z will cost just $100 more each service, at $499 per service.
Finally, Nissan LEAF owners will pay a flat price of $349 per service.
Under the program, all powertrains and transmissions are equalised in this pricing.
“With our new Nissan More ownership program including our new 10-year warranty and flat price servicing, we are delivering on our promise to Australian new car buyers,” Director of Aftersales, Nissan Oceania, Michael Hill, said.
“In tough times and in a period where the new car market is full of mixed messages, Nissan Australia is putting our customers first.”
As well as Kia, GWM, MG and Skoda also offer 7-year unlimited kilometre warranties.
Most other manufacturers offer 5-year unlimited kilometre warranties.
Some still offer three years.
Interestingly, the amount companies have to pay out over warranty claims is one of the car industry’s most closely guarded secrets.
