Meet the cheapest damn ute in Australia

China’s king of deals is back with the cheapest ute in Australia.

The Great Wall Steed single cab tradie special has been reintroduced at a walk out the door $18,990 drive away for ABN holders.

That’s for the 4×2 version with a diesel engine, 6-speed manual transmission, air conditioning and a tray already fitted.

Steed is the replacement for the V240 range. The dual cab version with the same mechanicals has been available for the past 18 months.

The Great Wall’s nearest competitor, the Tata Xenon, also comes with a diesel and tray, and is $19,990 drive away.

To put this in context Toyota’s mainstream 4×2 Hilux Cab Chassis is $24,990 with a diesel, but that’s not drive away and does not include a tray.

The Great Wall Steed Single Cab is available in both 4×2 and 4×4 form.

Both use the same 2.0-litre turbo diesel found in the dual cab range that delivers 110kW and 310Nm through a 6-speed manual transmission.

The single cab version comes standard with dual airbags, ABS brakes, Bosch ESP stability control, hill hold control and tyre pressure monitoring (dual cab gets six bags).

The Steed Single Cab boasts an 1198kg payload, while maximum towing tops out at 1700kg.

It comes complete with a locally manufactured aluminium tray, measuring 2400mm x 1777mm with drop sides for easy access.

Inside, the Steed single cab features comfortable but durable cloth seats, air conditioning and an auto-dimming rear vision mirror.

The Steed Single Cab comes with a three-year, 100,000km warranty, three-years’ roadside assistance and three years’ service price menu.

“Since we re-launched the Steed nameplate in 2016, we have received strong demand from dealers and customers for the return of the single cab version,” Great Wall’s Tim Smith said.

“With a mix of toughness, reliability and value for money, the single cab has always been a popular member of the Great Wall family. At its peak in 2012, the single cab version accounted for 55 per cent of all Great Wall utility sales.”
