Mazda’s first EV — here’s the price

Riley Riley

Mazda has opened the order books for its first EV, the Mazda 6e.

Surprisingly, however, it’s not an SUV but a rear-wheel drive hatch, cum coupe — an electric version of the Mazda6 if you will.

The long roofline, short-deck and coupe silhouette give the car an attractive sporty look, while maintaining the functionality of a five-door hatchback.

The SUV version, the CX-6e, is expected to follow in quick succession.

To put this in perspective, the timing couldn’t be better as figures released yesterday by the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) Regulator show the Japanese manufacturer is a long way from reaching emissions targets, but not the only Japanese manufacturer in this predicament.

Priced from $49,990 the Mazda 6e and Mazda CX-6e (price yet to be revealed) are based on the same platform as the Chinese Deepal S07 launched here last year.

This means the same running gear with a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels.

Like its European counterpart it will deliver up to 190kW of power and a maximum of 290Nm of torque.

Energy consumption is 15.9kWh/100km and Mazda claims a WLTP driving range of up to 560km from the 78kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery.

Mazda says the EV ushers in the next evolution of Mazda’s signature design philosophy, “Kodo: Soul of Motion”.

The Mazda 6e adopts an ‘Authentic Modern’ approach featuring smooth and flowing lines that give it a striking, yet sophisticated presence.

Perched on a generously sized 2895mm wheelbase, the Mazda 6e’s minimalist five-seat cabin is open and inviting, heavily influenced by the Japanese concept of “ma” – the beauty of empty space.

The seamless integration of advanced technologies and Mazda’s signature craftsmanship enhance the driving experience, while making all occupants feel at ease.

Equipped with a CCS Type-2 charging port, the Mazda 6e is capable of DC charging from 30–80 percent in as little as 15 minutes.

The 6e joins Mazda’s hybrid CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90 SUV lineup.

It will be offered in two generously equipped grades; GT ($49,990) and the flagship Atenza ($52,990) — both prices before on-road costs.

Standard kit includes tri-zone climate air, heated and ventilated front seats plus premium Sony sound with 14 speakers.
