Formula One World Champion Jenson Button will lead a squad of race aces for Honda in a bid to set new lap records at some of Europe’s most iconic race tracks.

Although the complete driver line-up is still to be finalised, Honda has confirmed that former world champion and current NSX Super GT driver Jenson Button (UK) will take part in the challenge.

WTCR drivers Tiago Monteiro (Portugal), Esteban Guerrieri (Argentina) and NSX Super GT star Bertrand Baguette (Belgium) will join Jenson for the challenge.

A similar event in 2016 saw benchmark times set at Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps, Monza, Estoril and Hungaroring, using the previous-generation Civic Type R.

The drivers then included racers from the British Touring Car Championship and World Touring Car Championship.

This time around Honda hopes to better the times it has already posted at Silverstone (UK), Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) and Estoril (Portugal), with more tracks to come.

Last year the Civic Type R became the fastest front-wheel drive production car to ever lap the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife, with a lap time of 7min 43.8sec.

The Type R is the fastest accelerating and quickest car in its class in Europe and is engineered to deliver the most rewarding drive in the hot hatch segment, both on road and on the race track.

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, the Civic Type R packs a wallop, with 228kW of power and 400Nm of torque from 2500 to 4500 revs.

In Europe, the car has a top speed of 272km/h, with a 0-100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds.

The previous model was good for 148kW and 193Nm, the latter at a lofty 6000 revs.

Honda will show the 2018 Time Attack Civic Type R at the Geneva Motor Show from March 8 – 18.
