Unlike the budget Toyota 86, buyers will have to dig deep for the all-new, reborn Toyota Supra.
At launch in early September, the heavily hyped GR Supra sports car will be priced from $84,900 plus on roads — twice the price of an 86.
But then it gets the turbo and lots of other gear that 86 owners have always yearned for, including a 250kW twin-scroll turbo, 3.0-litre straight six with 500Nm of torque.
Supra was last sold here way back in 1992.
The new GR model model is rear wheel drive, with a new quick-shifting, sports-tuned 8-speed auto, and launch control delivers a 0-100km/h time of 4.4 seconds.
Supra will be offered in two grades — GT and GTS — with the top-of-the-range GTS another $10,000 on top of this price.
The GTS adds high performance sports brakes, head-up display, JBL audio with 12 speakers and larger 19-inch alloys.
Only 300 cars will be offered in the first 12 months of sales.
Due to unprecedented demand and the limited number of cars available, Toyota has developed a new, online sales process to ensure a fair allocation of vehicles.
All orders will go through a centralised order process, with sales management and deliveries handled by Toyota’s extensive dealer network.
Customers will be able to log on to a dedicated website on June 19 at 12:00 noon AEST, to participate in the first round of reservations.
This window will remain open until approximately 100 reservations have been confirmed.
Toyota Vice President Sales and Marketing, Sean Hanley said Toyota was delighted it could offer the Supra, with its very high level of performance specification, at a sub-$100,000 price point.
“The GR Supra should be compared with vehicles in a much higher price bracket including top-end European sports coupes. It really is that good,” Mr Hanley said.
“I am certain anyone who experiences it will appreciate the engineering, passion and precision that has gone into building what we believe is one of the best value, most engaging drivers’ cars on sale in the world today.”
The online reservation website will use a random ballot to allocate the first 100 reservations and these lucky few will then be able to go on to complete the full registration process.
Successful customers can expect to receive confirmation within 24 hours, before receiving a phone call from Toyota’s dedicated Supra concierge.
