Hi-viz mandatory for motorcycle riders

Motorcycle riders will be forced to wear hi-viz and protective gloves under reforms introduced by the NSW Government.

The Government said the changes are designed to improve rider visibility and reduce the risk of serious injuries in crashes involving novice motorcyclists.

Under the reforms, learner, P1 and P2 riders in NSW will be required to wear approved motorcycle gloves from July 1 this year while learner riders will also be required to wear high-visibility vests or jackets.

The reforms also include expanded training and education requirements for novice riders.

They date back to the 2025 NSW Motorcycle Safety Roundtable, which brought together more than 70 riders, trainers, academics and safety experts with growing concern over motorcycle deaths and serious injuries on the State’s roads.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of new protections for novice motorcycle riders as part of the most significant motorcycle safety reforms in nearly 20 years.

FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said effective rider training and licensing arrangements play an important role in improving safety outcomes and supporting confidence in motorcycle mobility.

“Motorcycles and scooters provide an important mobility option for many Australians. They are affordable, practical and efficient forms of transport, particularly in increasingly congested urban environments,” he said.

“Encouraging safe participation in two-wheel mobility is important for the future of transport in our cities and regions.”

Mr Weber said the FCAI and its motorcycle members looked forward to continuing engagement with the NSW Government as the reforms are implemented.
