BYD adds plug-in hybrid M9 people mover

Due later this year BYD has announced the addition of the all-new BYD M9 people mover to its local lineup.

The plug-in hybrid M9 takes BYD into the people-mover segment for the first time and will be offered exclusively with BYD’s latest Dual Mode DM-i 5.0 Super Hybrid powertrain.

M9 range will be launched as a seven-seat Premium variant, with an eight-seat Dynamic variant to follow — both will be offered with front-wheel drive only.

BYD’s DM-i 5.0 Super Hybrid powertrain combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and electric motor, with two levels of power output: 191kW and 218kW.

Premium comes with a 36.60 kWh battery, the Dynamic with a smaller 20.39kWh battery.

Electric range is 145km, with a combined range of 850km (WLTP) — but these figures are provisional.

Both grades support AC and DC charging, as well as Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality.

M9 will square up against the likes of the Denza D9, GAC M8, Kia Carnival, Lexus LM, Xpeng X9 and Zeekr 09, in what has suddenly become an expanding rather than stagnate section of the market.

The people mover measures 5145mm in length and has a 3045mm wheelbase, to provide generous accommodation across all three rows.

The design we’re told draws inspiration from a traditional Chinese garden, with strong horizontal and vertical lines creating a distinctive presence.

They say a dragon-inspired front and elongated silhouette combine to deliver a design that is both elegant and understated.

Inside, the BYD M9 has been crafted to deliver a premium cabin experience for every occupant.

Premium variants feature heated and ventilated front seats, while second-row captain’s chairs offer heating, ventilation and a near zero-gravity seating position.

The BYD M9 pairs generous passenger accommodation with everyday practicality, offering 470 litres of luggage capacity with all seats in place.

A 1500kg braked towing capacity further enhances its versatility.

BYD’s Stephen Collins said the M9 marks an important addition to BYD’s Australian lineup.

“The BYD M9 will be well suited for Australians needing space and practicality while also expecting efficient performance with BYD’s advanced DM Super Hybrid powertrain technology,” he said.
