BMW has added an all-wheel drive version of the M2 Coupe.
Combining the acclaimed 3.0-litre six-cylinder M TwinPower Turbo engine with BMW M xDrive technology, the new BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive delivers enhanced traction, sharper acceleration and greater stability,
The S58 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine produces 353kW of power and 600Nm of torque.
Paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, the new model accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds.
The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to distribute drive torque variably between the front and rear axles, optimising traction and performance across a broad range of driving conditions.
In keeping with BMW M philosophy, the system retains a pronounced rear-wheel-drive bias.
Under normal driving conditions, power is directed exclusively to the rear wheels.
The the front axle engages only when additional traction is required.
Working alongside the Active M Differential, M-specific traction control and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), the M xDrive system continually adapts to road conditions and driving inputs to maximise agility, precision and confidence behind the wheel.
Drivers can tailor the operation of the M xDrive system through the M Setup menu, allowing performance characteristics to be adjusted according to driving conditions and personal preferences.
The BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive introduces BMW M Ignite Technology, a patented pre-chamber ignition system designed to increase combustion efficiency and support compliance with forthcoming European EU7 emissions standards.
The innovative system features a dedicated pre-chamber equipped with its own spark plug and ignition coil.
Connected to the main combustion chamber through a series of overflow openings, the system effectively creates two ignition processes within the engine.
At lower and medium engine speeds, combustion is initiated by the conventional spark plug in the main chamber before the pre-chamber system activates.
Under higher engine speeds and greater performance loads, the pre-chamber ignition assumes a more prominent role.
Fuel-air mixture ignited within the pre-chamber generates flame jets that exit at approximately the speed of sound, igniting the mixture within the main combustion chamber at multiple points simultaneously.
This accelerates combustion, improves efficiency and helps prevent uncontrolled combustion, commonly known as knocking.
The result is improved efficiency, particularly under sustained high-performance driving conditions such as track use, allowing drivers to maintain performance for longer while consuming less fuel.
Supporting the new ignition system are further enhancements including a higher compression ratio and turbochargers with variable turbine geometry, improving responsiveness, broadening the torque curve and reducing turbo lag across the rev range.
The BMW M2 Coupé M xDrive is priced from $133,100 plus on-road costs, becoming in effect a $5000 option over the rear-wheel-drive variant.
