Big step forward — BMW reveals electric 3 Series

Riley Riley

The first, fully electric BMW 3 Series, the i3 — has been revealed in Munich.

It follows hot on the heels of the iX3, becoming the second model of the BMW’s so-called Neue Klasse.

But this is by far and away BMW’s most important EV — because the 3 Series is historically its most important model.

However, this i3 is not to be confused with BMW’s first mass-produced EV, the 2014 World Green Car of the Year — the i3 hatch (produced from 2013-2022).

BMW says i3 represents a technological quantum leap into a new era, showcasing innovation, sophisticated styling, engaging dynamics and considerable electric driving range potential.

The launch variant, i3 50 xDrive, features two electric motors and has a combined system output of 345kW and 645Nm.

With a 109 kWh battery, it has a range of up to 900km (WLTP)

Notable features include the long wheelbase, the greenhouse that slopes towards the rear and the short overhangs.

The radiator grille and twin headlights have been reinterpreted, merging into an innovative light signature.

The rear end features prominent horizontal rear lights, with flared wheel arches to underline the EV’s sportiness.

Inside, the look is also geared towards driver-oriented sportiness.

The new BMW Panoramic iDrive ushers a new level of driver orientation.

Building on the unmatched capabilities of electric power, it offers impressively precise, effortless and assured handling.

The Heart of Joy high-performance computer shapes the BMW i3 driving experience.

Its responses are 10 times faster than in previous systems.

Together with three other high-performance computers, it forms the centrepiece of the new software and electronics architecture.

A DC charging level of up to 400kW drastically reduces charging times, with the claimed ability to add up to 400km in 10 minutes.

Sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology provides the prerequisites for this rapid progress.

It comprises highly efficient electric motors, 800-volt technology and new high-voltage batteries with round cells.

The cell-to-pack design enables high energy densities at pack level and a flatter high-voltage battery.

The i3 also offers Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Grid charging functions (local details on this capability to be announced in due course).

Production of the new BMW will start in August 2026, with Australian-bound vehicles due here in early 2027.
