Watch out Volkswagen because the three-pointed star is coming for you.
Benz has just announced the price of its new X-Class ute will start from $45,450.
That’s for the rear-wheel drive, cab-chassis with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The 4×4 is priced from $50,400 with a tub on the back, also with a manual.
These prices are before on-road costs.
Until now Volkswagen’s Amarok ute has ruled the roost as the premium ute in this rapidly expanding segment.
But that’s all set to change when the Benz X-class goes on sale next year.
Who’s going to want a VeeDub when they can put a Benz in the driveway?
Amarok starts from $38,490 for the 4×2 or $41,990 for the 4×4.
X-Class will be launched in April with 13 variants to start with, boasting two turbocharged four-cylinder engines – 120kW/403Nm and 140KW/450Nm.
A high-torque V6 diesel engine will be released in mid-2018, ensuring even greater power and agility on and off the road.
It will generate a class leading 190kW and 550Nm of torque and has already been proven in many passenger car models, from the G-Class to the latest E-Class.
Pricing for the V6 will be announced closer to the release date.
X-Class will be available with three cockpit trims, six seat covers including two leather variants with contrasting top stitching, and two colours for the roof lining, offering the widest choice of materials and colours in this vehicle segment.
