Subaru is giving the Liberty a send-off with a special Final Edition.

Now in its seventh generation, the car that claimed two Wheels Car of the Year titles will no longer be part of the local Subaru lineup going forward.

Once a star performer, it has been eclipsed by the company’s SUVs — Outback, Forester and the more recent XV — which now account for the bulk of sales.

Ironically, Outback is based on the Liberty wagon.

It’s been 31 years since the launch of the first Liberty back in 1989 and to mark each of those years just 31 examples of the Final Edition will be offered.

Based on the Liberty 2.5i Premium, it’s priced from $39,930 — just $1990 more than the standard Liberty 2.5i Premium

 

The Final Edition adds a longish list of extra kit valued at $6400, including:

  • 18-inch STI alloy wheels (wheel colour dependent on exterior paint colour)
  • STI front lip spoiler
  • Rear boot lip spoiler
  • Front grille – mesh pattern
  • Numbered internal badge – Final Edition
  • Harman Kardon speakers, subwoofer and amplifier
  • Seat and interior trim – Ultrasuede inserts
  • Blue stitching – seats, armrests, dash
  • Black stitching – steering wheel
  • Black interior highlights (air vents, dash, door trim, steering wheel)
  • Black exterior highlights (fog light surround, side skirt garnish, door mirror covers and rear exterior badges)

And it comes in just three colours, each with a different alloy wheel finish:

  • Magnetite Grey, with black wheels – 15 cars
  • Crystal Black, with silver wheels – 10 cars
  • Crystal White, with gunmetal wheels – 6 cars

Subaru Australia General Manager, Blair Read, said: “We wanted to mark the end of Liberty’s distinguished history with the brand in a truly exclusive way and these individually numbered vehicles are a tribute to what it has contributed to Subaru over more than three decades.”
